Moving to a new home is exciting, but it can also be stressful. Between packing, arranging transport, and settling into a new neighbourhood, it’s easy to forget about the services and subscriptions tied to your old address. If you don’t cancel or transfer them in time, you could end up paying for things you no longer use. Here’s how to make sure your move doesn’t cost you more than it should.

Start by Making a List

Before you move, take a moment to review all your regular payments. Go through your bank statements or UPI transaction history to identify recurring charges. Pay special attention to:

  • Internet and mobile connections – check if your broadband or postpaid plan can be transferred to your new address or if you need to cancel it.
  • Electricity, water, and gas – inform your local utility providers (like BESCOM, MSEB, or BSES) about your move so you’re not billed for usage after you leave.
  • DTH and cable TV – decide whether to move your connection or discontinue it if you plan to switch to streaming.
  • Insurance policies – update your address and check if your home or renter’s insurance needs to be adjusted.
  • Subscriptions and memberships – gym, OTT platforms, newspapers, and other services can quietly drain your wallet if left unchecked.

Write everything down and mark what needs to be cancelled, transferred, or updated.

Notify Utility Providers Early

Most utility companies in India require a few days’ notice to process a disconnection or transfer. Contact them at least a week before your move. On your last day, take meter readings for electricity, water, and gas, and keep a photo record. This will help you prove when your responsibility ended if there’s any billing dispute later.

Transfer or Cancel Internet and TV Services

Broadband and DTH providers like Airtel, Jio, ACT, or Tata Play usually allow you to transfer your connection to a new address. However, availability can vary by area. If your new home is outside their service zone, you can request a disconnection without penalty. Always ask for written confirmation of cancellation or transfer to avoid being billed twice.

Review Your Insurance Policies

A move often changes your insurance needs. If you’re shifting from a rented flat to your own home, or from one city to another, your coverage requirements may differ. Contact your insurer to update your address and check if you can adjust your premium. If you and your family have multiple policies with the same company, you might even qualify for a bundled discount.

Reassess Subscriptions and Memberships

Moving is a great opportunity to declutter your digital and lifestyle expenses. Do you really need three OTT subscriptions? Are you still using that gym membership or newspaper delivery? Many services allow you to pause or cancel easily through their apps. Use your move as a chance to simplify and save.

Update Your Address Everywhere

Once you’ve moved, update your address with banks, insurance companies, and government IDs like Aadhaar, PAN, and voter card. This ensures you continue receiving important communication and prevents missed bills or renewals. India Post also offers a mail redirection service in some areas, which can help during the transition.

Keep a Checklist for the Future

After you’ve settled in, save a copy of your moving checklist. Note down which services you cancelled or transferred and how long each process took. The next time you move, you’ll have a ready-made guide to follow—saving you both time and money.

Moving Is a Fresh Financial Start

A move isn’t just about changing your surroundings; it’s also a chance to reset your finances. By reviewing your regular expenses and cancelling what you don’t use, you can free up money for things that truly matter in your new home. A little planning now can make your move smoother—and your budget healthier—in the long run.
